Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk, Russia) AbstractFSC certificate is one of the main requirements set by the consumers of forest products in theEuropean market. The paper provides an overview of certification processes at forest enterprises, involving a number of successive steps: decision on certification, certification preparation, choice of an audit firm, signing the contract, pre-audit, eliminating inconsistencies, main audit, decision to issue the certificate, annual control audits, recertification audit. The general scheme of the forest management certification process for logging enterprises is shown on the flowchart. Each logging company, however, has its own peculiarities such as the presence of biodiversity in the leased forest areas or these areas’ being on the list of protected territories, etc. All these factors must be considered when issuing the certificate to enterprises. A ten-year certification monitoring conducted by the enterprises has revealed a number of peculiarities when it comes to the time required for certain steps in the certification process as well as their sequence and interaction with a range of parties concerned. To avoid production of non-certified products during the recertification period, one has to plan audits beforehand, taking into account the time required to eliminate inconsistencies that can delay the issuance of the certificate.
