Abstract

The article deals with the history of the international legal status of the Arctic archipelago in the context of bilateral relations. Having been given terra nullius status in the 1870s, Spitsbergen was placed under the sovereignty of Norway in 1920 without taking into account interests of the Soviet Russia which again actively asserted its claims in 1940s.
