Abstract

One of the important issues of Russian vocalism is the history of the sound [ě], since its presence or absence determines the system of vowel phonemes of a dialect. In the church manuscripts of the 15th century the letter  is traditionally preserved. In the chronicles and hagiographies, though, the numerous examples of the letter Е instead of  show that the pronunciation of  started to coincide with the sound [э].

Keywords

letter and sound , Old Russian norm, vocalism of vowels.
