Abstract

The article considers the situation in 1909–1910 concerning an illegal settlement of Norwegian manufacturers on Novaya Zemlya and Norwegian polar skippers’ demands to recognize a part of this archipelago a neutral territory. Unusually sharp Russian reaction to it and readiness of Russian authorities to use force for eviction of the Norwegian settlers from Novaya Zemlya at that time put an end to Norwegian claims for the archipelago.
