Abstract

The key element in the official politics of memory in modern Germany is an indication that the real antifascists and genuine patriots were the participants of the 20 July plot, i.e. representatives of traditional noble families. From this thesis follows the conclusion about the insurmountable antagonism between the German nobility and National Socialism. In his monograph, Stephan Malinowski demonstrates convincingly that the dramatic events of the early 20th century caused a sharp decline in the sociopolitical status of the once privileged class, which, in turn, led to the growth of right-wing sentiments, rapprochement with the National Socialist movement and support for Hitler’s regime by a significant part of the nobility.
