The author examines the history of creation and formation of student unions and fraternities in Russia and reveals a relationship between the revolutionary and student movements. Further, the role and place of students in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods are addressed. It should be noted that, with the onset of reforms in the Russian society and the country’s transition to market economy, the nature of the student movement and its social demands changed. Having been formed within the context of the liberation movement, the student body occupied an important place in the country’s social structure and political system, exerting a decisive influence on all spheres of culture as well as on politics. However, during the post-perestroika period students lost much of their social and legal status. The active social role of students, their social and professional functions and positive civic engagement were suddenly not needed any longer. This resulted in the devaluation of constructive norms and ideals, blurring the life stance of students as active transformers of the Russian society. Recently, there have been attempts to return this status of students by reviving or establishing various organizations covering their academic interests (from student labour groups to trade unions). Today it is important to rethink the historical experience, get students involved in social activity, cultivate their good citizenship within the most promising areas and optimal forms of organization, which need to be restructured and updated.Keywordsstudent body, students and politics, civic stand, good citizenshipReferences
