This paper looked at the most commonly applied types of pedagogical modelling, proved the importance of building an ideal competency model for students or specialists, which can be used to compare the actual and desired performance characteristics. The author carried out a critical analysis of the existing verbal and graphical methods to describe models, which give an idea of the composition of competency, but cannot reflect the many links between its components during different periods of time and at different stages of learning. An analogy is drawn here with Zelmanov’s cube of physical theories demonstrating the unity of diverse fundamental values and proving the incomplete, limited and flawed reflection of reality in the description of the subject of research if a measure is lost. The author comes to the conclusion that attempts to estimate any parameter of learning or personal characteristics of the student separately from other parameters result in losing the general picture of the concept. In addition, the paper proves the importance of transition to the multi-dimensional representation of the competency model, which allows one to display the unity of the components and their relationships, basic knowledge, and the influence of the components on each other. To build a competency model the author suggests using OLAP tools, widely applied in finance and economy, allowing one to assess different indicators simultaneously and in interaction with each other. Today there are numerous applications available for the implementation of OLAP technologies. This paper provides an example of building a model of information competency of a healthcare specialist by means of OLAP technologies.Keywordspedagogical modelling, competency model, OLAP technology, OLAP cubeReferences
