The Analysis showed that dialect speakers make a clear distinction between the grasslands that are suitable and those that are unsuitable for haymaking; this attitude of the peasant to the quality of grassland is expressed by various means and forms of verbalization. The research was conducted within the framework of cognitive approach aimed to study the perception and evaluation of certain elements of reality by a dialect-speaking person. In addition, the author turned to numerous academic works on axiology and cognitive dialectology. As materials for this research the author used the vocabulary recorded in the Dictionary of Vologda Dialects as well as fragments of dialect speech from the card catalogue of the dictionary. The analysis of these materials showed that the northern peasant evaluates grasslands primarily in terms of the methods of their cultivation and soil moisture. These assessments are reflected in dialect names of grasslands (mostly being reflected in their lexical semantics and derivational structure) and can be explained by the climatic conditions of the region. Lastly, the paper dwells on the linguistic worldview of the northern dialect-speaking peasant and highlights its main features, such as pragmatism, priority of the problems of human survival, conventionality and expressivity.KeywordsRussian dialectology, Vologda dialects, linguistic worldview, northern peasant, haymaking, farm, work in the fields, grasslandsReferences
