Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk, Russia) AbstractThis paper deals with student plagiarism in higher education institutions of Russia. The author believes that this phenomenon originates during the school years and takes on the character of unconscious borrowing of educational material in its various forms. Student plagiarism is largely caused by the transition to the standardized education model with the unified state exam as the main knowledge evaluating tool. As a result, school graduates form a mere user’s approach to mastering the curriculum. In the transition from the knowledge-based education model to the rational and pragmatic competencybased system, students perceive plagiarism as something common in their studies. They do not see learning in all its forms, including self-study, as a process of broadening and deepening their knowledge to develop the necessary practical skills. Formalized education involves introduction of strict standards and requirements for student learning. Plagiarism is a part of such formalization, eliminating the use of creative approach to the studies. According to the author, the problem of student plagiarism cannot be solved by administrative measures. It requires a number of other methods aimed at developing students’ skills of scientific research, collection and generalization of the obtained knowledge to write a term paper, a thesis or the first scientific paper in their life.Keywordsplagiarism, appropriation of information, knowledge-based education model, modern Russian student, university educationReferences
