Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk, Russia); Department of Education, Diocese of Arkhangelsk and Kholmogory; AbstractThis paper studies the enlightening activities of the Orthodox clergy in the Arkhangelsk province during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The author defines enlightening activities as a pedagogic category in relation to the Orthodox clergy and further explains it by taking the multifaceted service of M.I. Sibirtsev as a brilliant example of devotion to the case of enlightenment. The author looks at Sibirtsev’s work at the Arkhangelsk Theological Seminary, Eparchial Female College, and Church School and as a Chairman of the Eparchial College Council. His activities are studied in terms of their importance for the development of education in the Arkhangelsk province. The author analyzes Sibirtsev’s works (“Experience of Biblical Natural History…” and “Historical Note on the Arkhangelsk Theological Seminary”) and evaluates their importance for modern pedagogy and teaching practice. For the first time the article presents the pedagogical content of Sibirtsev’s unpublished sermons found in the State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Region. The author reveals the value potential of M.I. Sibirtsev’s legacy for the history of pedagogy of the second half of the 19th and early 20th century as well as for the spiritual and moral education nowadays.
