Abstract

The paper analyzes in detail the formation of verbs with figurative meaning in the historical root cluster with the etymological root *-lei-. The author focuses on the Old Russian period of the Russian language, as it is during this period that, due to various linguistic and extralinguistic factors, metaphorization became more productive, leading to the emergence of verbs with etymological root * -lei- having figurative meanings as well as to a more active formation of new figurative meanings of existing verbs. The author studies both intra- and extralinguistic factors affecting this process, such as an active interaction between Russian and some other languages, especially Greek. Further, the paper describes the different aspects of semantic calquing in this historical root cluster during the Old Russian period and studies the relation between semantic calquing and metaphorization. The author comes to the conclusion that semantic calquing in its various manifestations had a profound effect on the development of figurative meanings of verbs with the etymological root *-lei-. Moreover, these processes had a significant impact on semantic divergence within the historical root cluster.
