The difficulties associated with in-service training are pointed out. Further, the paper describes the approach to determining the role of different types of learning activities in forming professional competence. Special attention is paid to the general and specific aspects in the educational and actual professional activity when preparing masters-to-be. In addition, the authors give an account of their experience with teaching Master’s degree students in Herzen University, HSE (St. Petersburg) and SPbSUT. The fact that the masters-to-be are working in different spheres but have shown similar results indicates the efficiency of teaching Master’s degree courses to employed specialists.
