Abstract

The article analyzes the degree and nature of interdependence of the ethnic and religious factors in
social relations and determines the extent to which religion affects the formation of national identity and
the relationships between various nations and ethnic groups. The author points out that the intertwining
of the national and the religious depends on the specific socio-political conditions.
Ethnicity and religiousness are defined as models that guide the person in the social space. Moreover,
at the ethnic boundaries, religiousness often acts as an additional ethnic marker. These two identities –
the religious and the ethnic ones – may conflict and confront with each other on the group level, on the
level of communities or on the individual level.
The author of the article reveals special features of the religious factor’s manifestations in the
multinational Russian society and looks at the problems of interethnic and interfaith relations.
