Lomonosov; Arkhangelsk Scientific Сentre, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Arkhangelsk, Russia) AbstractThe paper dwells on the peculiarities of civil humanism of P.A. Sorokin’s sociological concept, basedon a number of his works written during his life in Russia and the USA. In these works, the issues of morality and value of human life are closely intertwined with politics. Culture and altruistic love prove to be the main sources of humanization in human history. Further, the paper unlocks the heuristic potential of the social space concept and the contradictory nature of social mobility in contemporary Russian society. Wealth appears to be an essential means of social mobility, allowing people to move within a social hierarchy and get promoted.
