Abstract

The article examines family documents used by Thomas Mann while writing the novel Buddenbrooks. Special emphasis is placed on the similarity of the events- and time structures that determine the structure of the narrative in the novel and the chronicle of the Mann family. The family book of Buddenbrooks is a link between both narratives and at the same time an illustration of the novel’s structure.
