Abstract

The article studies mechanisms of forming sociocultural space of settlements and villages in the area along the banks of the Mezen River. These mechanisms are represented through the toponimy, onomastics, nicknames and ancestral surnames. Self-identification of villagers involves division of the peasant society into “us” and “them” by their belonging to a certain area, family, kin and natural resourses.
