Abstract

The history of Russia is a history of its responding to sociocultural challenges of the West, East and the South, the main challenge being the European one and, in the first place, a world-view challenge, which since the 9th century has been issued by various means and which determined the special character of ideological, political and socioeconomic transformations in Russia. The 20th century marked the beginning of liberalization which entailed westernization of all spheres of the Russian society.
