Abstract

The article concerns the modernization of the ice-breaker and transport fleet in the 1950–1980s. The old steamships were replaced by the new diesel-electric and nuclear-powered ice-breakers, which made it possible to extend the time and area of navigation in the Arctic and to make the navigation in its western sector year-round.
