Abstract

Freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritiferidae fam.) are one of the most important groups of molluscs in terms of economy and nature protection. The review presents generalized data on the origin and evolution of Mesozoic species of pearl mussels. They originated in the Late Triassic, and during the Jurassic and Cretaceous they were widely distributed in the rivers of the Northern Tethys Basin.
