Abstract

The reviewed monograph is a result of an in-depth research into the major historic events of the first two decades of the 20th century in Russia. Volume 1 of the planned three-volume project objectively and scientifically presents a modern conceptual pattern of studying the background and the underlying causes of the Russian Revolution, the Civil War and the onset of Allied intervention. This is what makes up the scientific novelty of professor Goldin’s extensive work. Analysing historical trends on the all-Russian scale, he manages to fit the regional context of the Russian and Arkhangelsk North into it and gradually makes this aspect dominant. Moreover, he shows the region’s importance for the Entente Forces, which also adds to the originality of his approach. Another merit of the monograph is the provided qualitative characteristics of the persons that had been active participants in the Russian Revolution, the Civil War and the Allied intervention.
