In total, 100 publications were analysed in terms of genre variety of online media texts, originality of the information and realization of multimedia, interactive and hypertextual characteristics of online media. The author studied the most popular Russian and American onlineonly media: The Huffington Post, Drudge Report, Gazeta.ru, RIA Novosti and Tatar-Inform. Online media in Russia are at the first stage of development, still adhering to traditional formats of design and content. American online publications are at the second stage of development, already having their own typological characteristics, traditions of genre formation being among them. The bulk of the content of online publications is created in one or another information genre, widely using dialogic forms (remark, comment, interview). Such popularity of these forms in online media can be explained by the advantages of the Internet, namely interactivity and ability to communicate with readers online. Web 2.0 technologies and pragmatic purposes of communication also affect the process of genre formation in online media. Online communication with readers, viewers and listeners develops such genre forms as forum, comment, and online interview. The hypertextual nature of online media changes the classic forms of analytical genres in online journalism. Multimedia capabilities give rise to such mixed forms as interview with video fragments and infographic text representation.Keywordsmass media, online media, genre, mass communication, online newspaperReferences
