Abstract

The paper deals with remarkable floristic findings and information about the newly discovered sites of rare and protected plant species in Kholmogory district, Arkhangelsk Region. The findings were made in the designed special protected natural area (SPNR) and its surroundings during a number of years of the field research, including the field survey for the Zvozsky nature park creation. Some of the data were obtained during the landscape research and the study of floodplain and mire ecosystems on both sides of the Northern Dvina River in its middle reaches. The localities of 20 protected species of vascular plants listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation (Cypripedium calceolus, Dactylorhiza traunsteineri) and Arkhangelsk Region (Dryopteris filix-mas, Thelypteris palustris, Glyceria lithuanica, Gagea minima, Epipactis helleborine, E. atrorubens, Hammarbya paludosa, Nymphaea candida, N. tetragona, Astragalus australis, Tilia cordata, Viola mauritii, V. riviniana, V. selkirkii, Pleurospermum uralense, Chimaphila umbellata, Cortusa matthioli, Galium triflorum), and 14 rare vascular plant species lacking protected status are specified. All the listed species are supplied with the exact coordinates and data on their habitats and areals. The paper makes a point of the designed protected area for the biological diversity preservation. The authors recommend adjusting the boundaries of the Zvozsky designed nature park in order to ensure the preservation of habitat of Epipogium aphyllum that was found outside of the SPNR. This plant is listed in the Red Data Book of Russia. It is also recommended to organize the protection of the floodplain of the Northern Dvina River between the Nykola and Zvoz villages, where some rare and protected species are found.
