Abstract
The paper presents a brief review of the study of the Lower Devonian deposits in the natural outcrops
of the Pre-Urals foredeep, the western slope of the Urals and Pai-Khoi ridge and the islands of the
Pechora Sea. The research of the Lower Devonian was started at the outcrops of the Western Europe
in the XIX century. The article describes the main stages of geological study of the Lower Devonian in the Timan-Nothern Ural region, which was started in the 1920s. The history of stratigraphic charting with
facies deposition environment and zones of their development is demonstrated in the paper. The local
stratigraphical subdivisions with lithological and paleontological characteristics are defined. Detailed
biostratigraphic subdivision schemes are used in the analysis of sediments and paleogeographic
reconstructions. The Ovinparma and Sotchemkyrta deposits correspond to the Lochkovian stage.
The Lochkovian stage stratotype of the Lower Devonian was studied in the Kozhym river basin. The
Filippchuk suite is compared with the Pragian stage, the Syv’yu suite – with the Emsian stage. A wide
spectrum of facies is typical for the Early Devonian deposits. The Ovinparma suit is represented by open
shelf facies with rich complex of fauna, the Sotchemkyrta suit – by shelf and lagoon facies with poor
fauna complex. The terrigenous deposits are common for the Sotchemkyrta suite, Pragian and Emsian
stages. The local stratigraphical subdivisions of the Timan-Nothern Ural region were included in 1988
into the Devonian unified stratigraphic chart of the Russian platform. Regional and local stratigraphic
charts are based on the use of various faunal groups: brachiopods, ostracodes, corals, vertebrates.
Position of various organogenous structures in sedimentary cycles is defined. The basic features of
the Urals reefs are determined. The development of Lochkovian – Lower Emsian reef limestones in the
Western Urals outcrops is observed.
