Abstract
The Shichengskiy Landscape Reserve is the largest landscape reserve in the Vologda region (136.1
km2). Its brioflora consists of 70 species related to 40 genera and 23 families. The reserve brioflora have
not been studied earlier. 44 species are listed for the first time for the Syamzha district. According to the
abundance and coverage proportion the frondiferous mosses are one of the basic groups in the biota
structure of the Shichengskiy landscape reserve. Brioflora of the reserve is relatively poor (23.33 %
of the regional brioflora) due to the abundance of hydromorphic landscapes (an oligotrophic bog, a
dystrophic lake and boggy coniferous and parvifoliate forests). Poor representation or general lack of
spruce and aspen forests, lapideous lands, meadows, runnels and rivulets, boils and man-made areas
(except for the fisherman sites and fire-pits on the lakeside) decrease the abundance of species. Paludal
and sylvan-paludal moss species are the peculiarities of the reserve brioflora. Sphagnum mosses make
up a large part of the flora (19 species, 27.14 %). Two Sphagnum species (Sphagnum compactum
and S. warnstorfii) were found near the reserve boundary. Three species listed in the Red Book of the
Vologda Region (2004), such as Sphagnum lindbergii (2/VU), Sphagnum subsecundum and Pylaisia
selwynii (both species are biologically controlled) were found in the reserve. Some species are rare in
the region (Meesia longiseta, Mnium lycopodioides, Schistostega pennata, Sphagnum wulfianum) and
are recommended to be included in the List of the biologically controlled species in the second edition
of the Red Book of the Vologda region. Closely to the southwestern borders of the reserve there are two
more protected species were found – Neckera pennata (2/VU) and Sphagnum compactum (biologically
controlled species).
