The paper deals with the ethnographic, cultural and historical heritage research methods of one of the old-cultivated regions of the country. An important milestone is the preliminaries such as a choice of the settlements for the ethnographic research, composition of trip schedule, familiarity with the methods of questionnaire of the local population. Within the framework of the project supported by the Russian Geographical Society the Geography Department of the Pskov State University carried out an expedition in the western border districts of the Pskov region (on the border with Estonia and Latvia) in summer of 2014. This area possesses the significant cultural and historical heritage and specific ethnographic features. Finno-Ugric people of Setu, included in the list of the small ethnic communities of Russia in 2010, inhabit the Pechora district on the border with Estonia. The paper considers the research methods and the main results of the ethnodemographical and ethnosocial study of the Setu, and presents the data comparable to the results of the previous expeditions. Technical data sheets of some cultural objects identified earlier and included in the set of monuments were revised. Moreover, the authors studied the aspects of the results analysis of the research of the entire western border districts of the Pskov region and popularization of historical, geographical and ethnographical learning, especially among the schoolchildren. On the results of the expedition the students and pupils conference of the Pskov region was run and the collected works were published.Keywordsethnographic research methods, Setu, border districts of the Pskov region, small ethnic communities of RussiaReferences
