Abstract

The problem of the moose populations restoring has become the issue of the day for many regions of Russia. The moose magnitude of population is stable but small. The article analyzes the moose population status in the Kargopolsky District by a vast actual material. In the 21st century this area was inhabited by the maximum number of the moose units, they were the main commercial species. To date the mean density of moose population at this area is three times higher than that in the Arkhangelsk region (1.6 vs 0.59). However, it has decreased by the average of 30 % and half as much of the population optimum. In the analysis of breeding power and fertility the licence hunting data were used. The average number of embryos per a pregnant cow is 1.4, and per one mature cow is 0.87. These indexes for the Arkhangelsk Region during the same period were 1.35 and 0.64 respectively. We can conclude that there is a higher birth rate and breeding power of the moose in this area than that in the Arkhangelsk region. The echinococcosis and cysticercosis infection rate among the moose in the Kargopol district is rather high – about 27 % (the infection rate of echinococcosis infection is 18.2 % and cysticercosis is 9.1 %). Predators cause the heavy mortality of a moose. The main predator that kills the moose is a wolf. We have performed an analysis of the damage on the data of 2006. 34 species of wolves killed about 124 moose species, while the hunters killed three times less. There are also the recorded cases of attacks by bears, and among the victims many heavy with young cows were found.
