Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk, Russia) e-mail: natasha-pavlovich@yandex.ru AbstractThe article is based on a regional material obtained from the analysis of the earliest maps and literary sources. The author considers the process of changing perceptions of the northern territories of the European North and the display of these changes on the maps indicated by a time period. Map of the XVI century displays only the general idea of the outline of the continent before the end of the century; the North is reflected in the maps of foreign origin, as Russian sources almost did not survive. The article deals with the maps of European origin, which marked the northern territories on the basis of known information, ancient Russian drawings or after visiting the Russian state by foreigners. In the XVI-XVII centuries mapping of the northern territories focused on the seashore, due to the appreciation of the needs of navigation, search the Northeast Passage through the seas of the Arctic Ocean and the implementation of trade relations with other countries. The inner parts of the territory remained unexplored for a long time that can be traced at all the maps. Relevance of the topic is defined as a constant interest in the history of geography and history of exploration of the North of Russia, because of its special significance for the country as a promising resource base, the former role in the development of the Northern Sea Route. This paper can be used at local history, as a source of information on the history of the region development, in the deliberations on the history of cartography of the North.Keywordshistory of mapping, asynchronical maps, mapping of the Russian NorthReferences
