Abstract

Nowadays the question of development of the schemes of the historical and geographical zoning at lower hierarchical levels is very important. These investigations are carried out to study the changes in the regional structure of the study area through time. The paper presents the experience of the historical and geographical regionalization of the North- West European Russia. An original method of zoning based on the use of "floating marks" is offered. The complex of marks with physiographical and social and geographical character is considered in the regionalization, and the key mark is natural landscape. Forming the schemes of the historical and geographical zoning we prefer the complex landscape mark, as the landscape allotments are primary concerning the socioeconomic and political and administrative marks, as they had existed before the human society occurred. The basic idea of the landscape approach is the simultaneous registering of zonal and azonal landscape factors. This zoning corresponds to the method of the leading mark and is preferably carried out "from above", but received scheme of the areas is specified and concretized "from below." Another important type of regionalization of the complex character is the integrated cultural and geographical zoning which has the invariant – historical and cultural regionalization. This type is also should be used. The uniqueness of the historical and geographical area of any rank is determined by the specific nature of the relationships in the triad "landscape - ethnicity – natural resource management." A historical and geographical area can be divided at some fractional units according to the traditional kinds of arts and crafts, dialectal features. The scheme of regionalization of the North-West historical and geographical part is developed. Two historical and geographical subregions, five provinces and fifteen districts are separated within this region. Brief description of the historical and geographical provinces is presented. The results of regionalization will be used in the collective monograph devoted to the historical geography of the North- West European Russia. The main idea of the named project is to summarize the results of investigations in the historical geography (as its natural branch, so the humanitarian concepts) and related sciences.
