Abstract

The year 2014 marks the 170th anniversary of H. Goebel, a famous Russian ornithologist, forester, historian and entrepreneur. This article analyzes his ornithological observations which he made on his journey from St. Petersburg to Arkhangelsk by the Volga, Vologda, Sukhona and Northern Dvina rivers in 1864. H. Goebel’s publications cover 96 bird species, primarily waterfowl and semi-aquatic birds. He provides data on their habitats, some information on their number and phenological phenomena. This paper presents a list of species recorded by Goebel, according to their modern classification. To assess the current status of the species we used data from the second half of the 19th century. 68 out of the listed bird species remain common or abundant. 11 bird species have become relatively rare, and 16 species need protection and are included in the Red Books of Russia or its regions. One of the species (Branta leucopsis) had since then not been registered on this territory.
