Abstract

The paper describes transformation of post-agrogenic lands on carbonate deposits in the middle taiga subzone (Kargopol District of the Arkhangelsk Region). We studied 15–40-year-old deposits to research the agro-physical and agro-chemical properties of the residual carbonate soils, which are not typical of this region. Soils of old abandoned fields retain signs of plough-layer which, eventually, becomes more solid with bulk density rising up to 1.4–1.7 g/cm3. Their potential fertility remains at a high level: high total exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity and degree of base saturation (80 %), humus content at an average level within the region. However, once the soils are abandoned and excluded from active agricultural turnover, one can see a marked reduction in mobile forms of phosphorus and, especially, potassium. 20–40 years after sod-podzolic residual carbonate soils stop being worked and become overgrown, they can be considered as cultivated.
