It reports on the basic provisions and implementation of the Federal target program “Ensuring Nuclear and Radiation Safety for 2008 and for the Period till 2015”. Major factors affecting the choice of the national concept of nuclear facilities decommissioning are considered. Key aspects having influence on ensuring nuclear, radiation and environmental safety of the personnel, population and nature at decommissioning are revealed. We come to the conclusion that key safety issues at nuclear decommissioning concern radioactive waste and spent fuel management. New technologies for spent fuel and radioactive waste reprocessing, as well as for dismantling and decontamination of hazardous radioactive objects will help to manage the long-term stored types of spent fuel and accumulated radioactive waste and to retain leadership in the sphere of technology.Keywordsdecommissioning, nuclear power plants, radioactive waste, spent fuel, nuclear and radiation safetyReferences
