Abstract

The paper deals with determining the boundary of the Arkhangelsk urban agglomeration, as well as with description and assessment of its economic and geographical location. The agglomeration boundary was determined using the isochrone method as the main and the most accurate one. The agglomeration boundary was drawn using 1.5-hour public transport isochrone as a measure of accessibility. The paper determines the composition and size of the population within the Arkhangelsk agglomeration, provides a schematic map of the agglomeration and describes its formation. Further, it presents an integral estimation of the economic and geographical location of the Arkhangelsk agglomeration, taking into account its proximity to fuel and raw material sources, as well as manufacturing centres. Agrogeographical location of the agglomeration is described. Peculiarities of the transport and geographical location are revealed, the seaside location and that in relation to other main tracks are evaluated. The paper presents a schematic map reflecting internal and external communications of the Arkhangelsk Commercial Sea Port. The proximity of the agglomeration to the finished goods markets is estimated. Furthermore, demo-geographical conditions of the Arkhangelsk agglomeration are considered; the problems on the labour market are shown. The micro-, meso- and macrolocations of the agglomeration under study are determined. The paper reflects the negative aspects of the economic and geographical location and suggests the ways to improve it in order to further develop the Arkhangelsk agglomeration.
