Abstract
The paper presents the study results of the constancy indices for two boreal plant species – may
lily and north twinflower (Maianthemum bifolium (L.) F.W. Schmidt and Linnaea borealis L.) in the forest
communities, which is the basis for studying the range structure of these species within the forest
biomes of European Russia. The survey is based on data collected from the geobotanical descriptions,
scientific publications and the results of the field studies received by the authors in Arkhangelsk and
Murmansk regions. The regularities of constancy changes of both species within the biome, regional
and local levels are considered. The biome level distribution is subjected to the latitudinal gradient. The Maianthemum bifolium constancy increases from the northern taiga to the sub-boreal forest territories
with a maximum in the southern taiga and subtaiga. The greatest indicators of constancy of Linnaea
borealis are associated with the northern and middle taiga. At the regional level within the middle taiga
territory with similar landscape conditions we reveal an increase in the constancy of both species in the
habitat of old-growth spruce forests. The extent of the coenotic connection is rather different for two
species. Linnaea borealis is presented only in the old-growth spruce forests. Maianthemum bifolium
is distributed in some different forest types including the secondary forests. The local level survey
has shown that Linnaea borealis is more active in humid and poor in mineral nutrition sites of boreal
communities, while Maianthemum bifolium has a high constancy in some various sites, as confirmed
by the Ecological indicator values. The suggested way for species constancy studying within the biome,
regional and local levels can be used for the study of the range structure and space differentiation of
boreal forests and their changes under the anthropogenic impact.
